THE FB4K STORY

How it all started

In 2008, Free Bikes 4 Kidz (FB4K) began as a simple idea in a two-car garage. What started as a one-time hobby—just a handful of passionate cyclists collecting, repairing, and giving away 250 bikes in two weeks—sparked a movement no one expected. Those first 250 bikes became 750 the next year, then 1,000… and that’s when everyone realized something extraordinary was taking shape.

FB4K incorporated in 2009 and received its 501(c)(3) status in 2010, paving the way for growth far beyond Minnesota. New chapters began to emerge across the country, each fueled by volunteers who believed every kid deserved the joy, freedom, and opportunity that comes with a bike.

Momentum accelerated quickly.

In 2015, the Utah chapter launched—and that same year, FB4K entered the global spotlight by earning a Guinness World Record. On October 10, 2015, the organization achieved “The most bicycles donated to charity in 24 hours,” giving away an incredible 5,512 bikes in Minnesota.

Chapters continued to spread:
  • 2016: Atlanta joined, rapidly becoming one of the largest and most active sites.

  • 2017: Eugene, Oregon, opened—one of the smallest chapters, but among the most prolific.

  • 2018: Detroit, Michigan, and Portland, Oregon, expanded FB4K’s reach into two major cycling cities.

  • 2019: Maryland launched.

  • 2020: To support rising demand and provide strategic leadership, FB4K created the National Chapter.

  • 2021: Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico, teamed up to deliver 1,100 bikes in a single season.

  • 2022: Omaha, Nebraska, and Phoenix, Arizona, joined the growing network of cities.

By 2024, FB4K celebrated a remarkable milestone: 200,000 bikes given to kids—more refurbished bikes than any organization of its kind in the nation.

What began in a garage has become a coast-to-coast movement, powered by thousands of volunteers, hundreds of partners, and one shared belief:

Every kid deserves a bike—and the chance to ride toward a brighter future.
